Inspiring Today's Children to Invent Tomorrow

Who We Are
At A Glance

Mission & Vision

Everything we do at the Talcott Mountain Science Center supports our vision of a future where innovative education empowers lifelong learning.

How do we get there? Our mission guides the way: inspiring today’s children to invent tomorrow.

We work with leading scientists, technologists, inventors and innovators to bring current scientific principles, practices and technologies into the classroom in a meaningful and age-appropriate way. We advocate ‘STEAM’ (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), as we integrate science and technology with all aspects of the curriculum.

We also work closely with the State Department of Education and partner with science-rich institutions throughout the state. We are members of the Connecticut Science Supervisors Association, CT Science Teachers Association, Earth Science Teachers Association and are a national GLOBE partner.

“The experiences that I had [at Talcott] were invaluable to me as a fledgling scientist and as a person. The Science Center is a true jewel among educational institutions for the many unique opportunities it provides for students everywhere.”

- Dr. Linda Ivany

Our Facilities

Located on the top of Talcott Mountain in Avon, CT, we command a breathtaking view of 5,000 square miles, which reaches beyond the borders of the state. We are able to survey the geography and geology, observe the weather and have an unobstructed view of the celestial sphere.

People

The Talcott Mountain Science Center has a long and proud history of making the most of talented people.

Our staff have credentials in their respective fields of science and over 100 years of collective teaching experience. They are involved statewide and nationally in curriculum development, teacher inservice and classroom implementations of hands-on real-world science.

Our Administration is comprised of experienced educators with credentials in science and education and hundreds of years of collective teaching experience.

Our Students

While every student at Talcott is unique, there are several shared qualities that they usually possess: Curiosity, Creativity and Enthusiasm.

They have above average ability and frequently have been identified as gifted and talented by their previous school or through private testing.

Talcott students come from a group of roughly 15 different towns in Connecticut in a radius of up to 30 miles. There is a wide socioeconomic mix supported by significant financial aid. The percentage of minority students averages between 15 and 20 percent. The student body is approximately 40 percent female and growing.

Our Mission

To inspire a love of learning through discovery and engagement; to explore the interconnected nature of science, technology and our ever-changing world; and to be the catalyst that unlocks the potential within each individual.
